National Parks-our best idea

It has been said that the national parks are our country's best idea.  Certainly they are something worth celebrating on this 100th anniversary year.  Having lived in countries where there are not parks with such open accessibility, we can certainly say they are a grand heritage.  Now PBS is airing their series by Ken Burns called "The National Parks" celebrating the national parks!  You can catch episodes on your local station (find yours here ) or you can watch them online for a limited time here.

This is truly the year to get out and discover our national heritage in our National Parks!  This year, as many of you know, marks the centennial of the park service.  They have all sorts of fun events going on as part of the celebration this year.  We are excited to share that ALL national parks will be offering FREE admission to everyone April 16-24!  I know that is right around the corner but it isn't too late to do a little planning and get out to visit a park near you.  Spring is a great time to get out-water is flowing, flowers are blooming, the weather isn't too hot or too cold.  Find a park near you and go check it out for free this April!  Let us know where you went and what you loved about it.

Spring Biking in Yellowstone

Our cousins in Montana just informed us about a cool event every spring that we did not know about.  Each year the park closes its roads to snowmobiles and other winter travel on March 15th.  From that time until the third Thursday in April, some of the roads are kept open for non motorized traffic, typically bicycling.

We don't recommend bicycling with kids during the regular season because there are no bike lanes and little to no shoulders on those busy roads, and that makes it a hazardous undertaking for kids.  But when the roads are closed to vehicles it would be a fantastic way to see the park at a time of year when the wildlife would be more visible.

So, if you are near the park and can make a quick trip over, check out this website for more details so you can enjoy the wonderful Spring weather we are having in Yellowstone!

We, Harley and Abby, are the parents of 7 boys and 1 girl whom we regularly drag into any and every national park we come near to.  We love our parks and know that the only chance we have of keeping and maintaining this priceless resource is to give our children a love of them too.
